Prairie Home, Silk Road, Recording, and more

Hey all,

I hope you had a great summer.  Many of you receiving this message are new to the mailing list, having signed up at a recent show – so welcome!

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be performing with my trio on A Prairie Home Companion with this Saturday, October 10th. Also on the bill are good friends Aoife O’DonovanSara Watkins, and Sarah Jarosz (they’ll be guest hosting!) as well as Tom Brosseau. The show will be broadcast live from the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, MN, from 5-7 pm Central time on the 10th.  I’ll be joined in my trio by ever-awesome musical compatriots Joshua Pinkham and Quinn Bachand.  Hope you can tune in for what’s sure to be a great show!

The trio had a great summer performing all over the country.  The premiere of Bull Frogs Croon, a new orchestral piece featuring myself and Aoife O’Donovan, composed with Teddy Abrams and Peter Sears, was a great success at the Britt Festival in Jacksonville, OR.  And in September, the Jeremy Kittel Band capped off the summer by closing out the Olympic Music Festival‘s otherwise all-classical concert series in bucolic Washington State.

A couple weeks ago, I had the honor of attending a recording session for the Silk Road Ensemble featuring Yo-Yo MaAbigail Washburn, and Wu Tong, as they recorded my brand-new arrangement of “Going Home,” the classic American song derived from Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s “New World Symphony.”  This beautiful, multicultural piece now has a Chinese connection as well; Abigail and Wu Tong worked to translate much of the lyrics, and I rearranged the song for two voices, banjo, Sheng, clarinet, viola, and, of course, Yo-Yo on cello.  I can’t wait to hear the final result, and to see the upcoming video.

Finally, I’m looking forward to recording my next solo album this fall!  The music is written, the band is rehearsed, and the studio and musicians are all booked.  I really believe this will be a special album, and it’s been long in the making.  But it’s a big, ambitious undertaking, and to do it right, we’ll need some help.  If you happen to be a super-fan, and you’re interested in helping make it happen, feel free to send me a message at

That’s it for now; all the best!
